"Morning persons" needed for adult ESL Program
Organization |
Description
The Cedar-Riverside Adult ESL Program is looking for volunteers for our morning (9-12, any day Monday through Friday) classes. Working together with a paid teacher, you will help our students acquire the basic English they need to read letters, instructions, medicine labels, fill out applications, prepare for employment and much more. We're a community organization serving 100+ students daily, and many of our classes are held in the building where our students live. Most of our students are immigrants and refugees from East Africa, mostly Somali and Oromo.
We're conveniently located next to the Cedar-Riverside lightrail station and also just a few blocks from the west bank of the University of Minnesota. At this time we're primarily looking for morning volunteers, but other times (12:30 - 3 and 6:00 - 9:00) are also available.
For more information, please see our website: http://cr.themlc.org
To schedule an orientation, please e-mail Rachel at VolunteerAtCedarRiverside@yahoo.com or call at (612) 436-0400. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
Skills
- Volunteers should be fluent in English, but we don't require knowledge of ESL methods or experience in an educational setting. Our volunteers are, however, eligible for a 12-hour training from the Minnesota Literacy Council (cost is $20) and free 2-hour in-service trainings from the same organization.
