The Maya Angelou Young Adult Learning Center (YALC) provides academic and workforce development to older youth/young adults, ages 17-24, who do not have a high school credential, and particularly those transitioning from incarceration. Prepare young adult at the YALC to obtain their GED credentials. Math, science and English literacy are the subjects our students struggle with. Ideally, we would like volunteers to be in classrooms with instructors from 10AM-3PM. But, volunteering for a couple of hours(1-2) is also encouraged. Mission Statement

Our mission is to create learning communities in lower income urban areas where at-risk youth can grow academically and socially. At Maya Angelou, our students develop academic, social, and employment skills they new to build rewarding lives. We currently need volunteers to serve as one-on-one tutors/mentors to students, primarily in grades 9-12, to develop a special relationship with students while working on academic skills during the school year.

Description

Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools is committed to providing a comprehensive education in a non-traditional setting. We achieve this through a demanding academic program, socio-emotional learning support, and tiered interventions that focus on the whole child. The organization includes Maya Angelou Public Charter High School and the Young Adult Learning Center.
