The San Fernando Valley Literacy Council (founded 1962), 818-893-5216 offers ongoing learning opportunities for adults in literacy (reading, writing and comprehension) and English as a second language (ESL) free of charge, only a nominal charge for books. Almost all tutoring is one-on-one by mutual arrangement, and there is a great need for tutors as well as students. Both tutors and students are needed!
No teaching experience is necessary, just the willingness to commit about two hours a week at a mutually agreed time and place to help another improve his/her reading and writing skills. Tutor training is one session. There is computer learning center in North Hills that provides opportunities to learn English using a computer and some basic computer skills.
Current need (September 2011): If you have basic computer skills, we need a daytime volunteer for at least one 90 minute period weekly on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 6:15 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. to tutor using "Rosetta Stone" ESL program and "Ultimate Phonics."
