Presenter - What in the World? Program - Kent County

Description

What Is "What In The World"?

Volunteer presenters show students one or more mystery objects related to the work they do. The objects may be tools, equipment, raw materials, unfinished products, or other "things" that are unknown to the students. The mystery object may be part of a brief demonstration or may be displayed for students to observe during a brief discussion.

How It Works

In a large room, presenters and their mystery objects are stationed at separate tables with 10-12 students seated around each table. Students first try to guess the purpose and function of the mystery object(s). If observing a demonstration, they question what is happening and why.

After a few minutes of guessing and being given hints, the presenters reveal the answer and explain how the object or demonstration is connected to their careers. Presenters talk about the education and training required for their jobs, encouraging students to work hard in math and science. By this time ten minutes have elapsed, the students rotate to a new table, and a new group joins each presenter. During the program, each student will see three or four different presenters.

Time Commitment

Volunteers will be in the school for approximately two hours. Preparation time varies.
