Befrienders are matched with a SURVIVORS' client in order to help to welcome them to the San Diego community. The goals of the program are to: 1) help build clients' self-esteem and empower them to live independently in their new communities and 2) build awareness about survivors and give local community members an opportunity to help address their needs. The nature of the friendship is shaped by the specific needs and interests of both the Client/Friend and the Volunteer/Befriender. It generally includes a combination of social and advocacy-related activities like meeting for coffee, attending free events, practicing English or learning to use the bus system. The recommended commitment is 6-8 hrs/month for 6 months.

Description

Survivors of Torture, International is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for survivors of politically-motivated torture and their families who live in San Diego County. Since 1997, SURVIVORS has helped more than 3,000 torture survivors and newcomer youth from more than 80 countries to recover from their traumas through a holistic program including medical, dental, psychiatric, psychological, legal and social services. SURVIVORS empowers torture survivors to reclaim the strength and vitality that were stolen from them by brutal dictators and governments. The specialized care SURVIVORS provides these vulnerable individuals helps them to become self-sufficient and healthy members of their families and of our community.
