ORGANIZATION: Kids in a New Groove

  • 4 people are interested

Kids In A New Groove (KING) is an Austin-based nonprofit that provides Central Texas youth in foster care with a committed, one-on-one mentoring relationship through weekly, private music instruction. Firmly believing in the power of music to change lives, our Mentoring through Music program gives students the ability to build concrete strategies for life-long success. KING’s volunteer Music Mentors are a vital component to our organization's and community's prosperity.

We are currently looking for a multi-instrumentalist Music Mentor for a residential treatment center located in North Austin. We are looking for someone to teach guitar and any of the following if possible: piano, voice, percussion.

KING requires all Music Mentors be at least 18 years of age, with the ability to commit to a minimum of at least one full year of music lessons, once paired with a student. Our program is different from other music programs; youth in foster care are frequently move homes, making them unable to connect with a school band, orchestra, or after-school program. Our year commitment ensures that each child has a guaranteed mentor relationship and creative outlet they can depend on. KING provides each student with the instrument and music accessories needed, and also finds opportunities for our teachers/students to perform for an audience and to attend musical workshops.

If you are an Austin-area musician and/or music teacher, consider becoming a Music Mentor with Kids In A New Groove today!
