Volunteer for a fun St. Patrick’s Day tradition! - Irish Arts Center’s Annual Book Day

On or near St. Patrick’s Day each year, we rely on great volunteers to help us hand out free books by Irish and Irish-American authors across the boroughs of New York City.

Volunteer shifts can be suited to your availability and we try our best to match people to the borough of their choice. For more information and to sign up please fill out our availability survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QC82PSF

If you aren't available on Book Day itself, Tuesday, March 17, don't fret! A large part of the event prep depends on your help in making sure each book has an Irish Arts Center sticker and bookmark. Volunteering for these "stuffing" days is a fun way to get involved with the center in a relaxed environment. We’ll have flexible hours available during the weeks leading up to Book Day, so if you’re still interested in helping out, please let us know and we'll keep you up to date on details.

If you have any questions, please email: iacbookday@gmail.com or call (212) 757-3318 extension 203.

"This is a lovely way to remind everybody that the Irish are known for their literature." -The Wall Street Journal

In a citywide celebration of Irish literature we'll be handing out 10,000 free books and want you to be part of the fun!

Mission Statement

Founded in 1972, Irish Arts Center is a New York-based arts and cultural center dedicated to projecting a dynamic image of Ireland and Irish America for the 21st century, building community with artists and audiences of all backgrounds, forging and strengthening cross-cultural partnerships, and preserving the evolving stories and traditions of Irish culture for generations to come.

Description

The Irish Arts Center is located in historic Hells Kitchen in New York City. We are a multi-disciplinary arts and cultural center with a very full schedule as we present theatre, music, dance, literature, and film throughout the year. We have an active visual and cultural exhibition program. We also have a very strong education program offering over 30 classes a week in Irish music, dance, and language. We work very hard to share what is a unique and rich cultural heritage with not only Irish and Irish-Americans but with the greater community as well.

To emphasize that point we strive to work with other cultural institutions throughout New York including the Harlem Arts Alliance, Jewish Heritage Museum, Symphony Space, the Baryshnikov Arts Center and others.

Yearly program highlights:

St. Patrick's Day Open Day: This is an exciting free family event with live music, dance, workshops, crafts for kids, and films.

Irish Book Day: Starting in 2011 each St Patrick's day we set up at subway stops and transportation hubs throughout the five boroughs of New York and hand out 10,000 free books by Irish and Irish-American authors.

NY Irish Dance Festival: Another free all-day event which kicks off the Summer on the Hudson series in Riverside Park. It's a great day full of live music, panel discussions, crafts, workshops, and of course dance.

An Irish Christmas: A Musical Solstice Celebration: Features an eclectic mix of tunes, stories, and special guests from jazz singer Tamar Korn, Filipno singer Grace Nono to usual gang of traditional Irish musicians. Whatever your holiday tradition its an unmissable, delightful celebration of the season!

To see more of what we do please visit our website at www.irishartscenter.org. We have an amazing line up of concerts, theatre and films throughout the year.
