Mission Statement

Palos Verdes School Gardens seeks to create community based edible education opportunities in public places of greater Los Angeles including weekly school garden programing and restaurant gardens that connect chefs to schools.

Description

Sustainable Palos Verdes Schools (SPVS) dba Palos Verdes School Gardens (PVSG) is an environmental community based non-profit organization that works to enrich the health and education of K-12 students and their greater community by providing weekly garden based programming on school campuses within Los Angeles County and installing and maintaining edible restaurant gardens that function as a representation of edible education awareness outside of the school campuses and engaging the greater South Bay community by bringing school garden produce to local chefs. Palos Verdes School Gardens (PVSG) Outdoor Classroom program seeks to encourage students and teachers to consider the school garden as an extension of the traditional classroom rather than an extracurricular activity. The PVSG Outdoor Classroom is a living laboratory where lessons are tied to state curriculum standards, encourage inquiry-based learning, provide hands-on experiential learning opportunities and support next generation science standards. As part of their grade level experience each week, students have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers, write and draw what they experience in their garden journals, prepare and taste seasonal and local produce, plant and tend to their school garden beds and develop an understanding of what is needed to become environmental stewards of the future.
