Do you have a good pet that is social and well adjusted? Have you ever considered you and your furry friend as a team? Would you like to give back to the community, but did not know where to start?

Homestead Hospice in partnership with Happy Tails is seeking pets and handlers to visit patients in communities that we serve.

The requirements are:

. The pet and handler must have lived together for a minimum of six (6) months

. Pets may not be on a raw meat diet.

. The pet and handler must successfully complete an assessment before being assigned to a community.

. The pet must be able to follow 5 essential commands; Sit, Come, Down, Stay, and leave it.

. There is an annual fee of $35.00 to cover assessment and administrative costs.

Assessments are held one Saturday per month. After a successful assessment, pets and handlers shadow more seasoned members of the organization for several visits.

FAQ’s

What is an assessment?

An assessment is where the pet and hander are evaluated for the ability to work together. The handler must be able to demonstrate that the pet can follow basic commands. (Sit, come, down, stay, leave, etc.) If either the pet or handler does not meet the requirements of the assessment, you may reschedule it. The assessment team will let you know what areas need improvement.

What does is cost?

The only fee involved is the $35.00 annual fee to Happy Tails. There is no fee to Homestead Hospice.

Why do I need to shadow?

Shadowing is required to ensure that all rules and procedures are followed. Also, to further observe both the pet and handler in a safe environment.

Where would my pet and I be assigned?

Homestead Hospice will make every effort to assign buildings within the area of the pet and handlers home.

What is the time requirement?

While Homestead Hospice does not require a commitment of time, Happy Tails asks that each approved pet and handler volunteer at least every six months.
