About The Race For Education

Mission Statement
The Race For Education (RFE), a national 501(c)(3) scholarship organization, enables young people of equine industry families as well as those who want to pursue an equine-related or agricultural career, both with significant financial need, to obtain a college degree by providing tuition support; financial literacy training to help students minimize their debt load; mentoring services to provide students with emotional support; and permanent jobs upon graduation.
Description
Young people are the future of the equine industry. Their development will help create dedicated fans, employees and hopefully the horsemen and women of tomorrow.
Since its founding in 2002, The Race For Education has awarded college scholarships to students in 40 states from a broad variety of backgrounds with varied scholastic pursuits. As our students graduate, RFE assists them in finding jobs within the equine and agricultural industries.
Our scholarships are need-based, with our main focus on the average student (2.85 GPA) who might not have the opportunity for other financial aid. RFE strives to find individuals that have the ability and the desire to give back to the community.
A selection committee made up of industry professionals and independent of our Board of Directors evaluates the applications. Each student receives a score in four weighted categories: financial need (35%), personal conviction and leadership (25%), personal interview (20%), and essay and communication skills (20%). In most cases, once a student has been selected, RFE makes a commitment to fund (or help secure funding via matching donations or other scholarship programs) the majority of the student's undergraduate tuition costs. The scholarship recipient must maintain a 2.85 GPA and provide the RFE Board of Directors with a letter of update and their current contact information each semester.
RFE also provide grants to partner organizations for equine industry-related programs such as English as a Second Language and GED preparation.
The Race For Education's primary source of funding is the Racehorse Nomination Program, in which horse owners donate a percentage of their racehorses' earnings to the scholarship program. Annual fundraisers include The Race For Education 5K/10K Run, held in beautiful Midway, Kentucky, each October; and the Thoroughbred Charities of America Stallion Season Auction in December.
One hundred percent of all donations to The Race For Education are used for its scholarships and other educational programs.
