KIDS ROOM UPKEEP ASSISTANT

The museum is closed to the public on Mondays from September to March, and this is when we need volunteers to assist the Kids Room staff with vital behind-the-scenes maintenance tasks. The Kids Room is the Maryland Science Center's space dedicated solely to our youngest guests, and we need help maintaining and repairing our much-loved, and much-used, hands-on exhibits.

We're looking for either individual adults interested in a one-day-a-week opportunity, or small groups of adults or youth (5-10 people) interested in a one-day-only opportunity. Groups (both youth and adult) should contact the Maryland Science Center's Volunteer Coordinator for further information about applying.

Duties:

  • Projects include but are not limited to: bleaching and sanitizing loose parts of exhibits, cleaning and dusting exhibit components, maintaining fish and small animal tanks, painting and making light repairs

Required Skills:

  • Willingness to follow directions and adhere to safety guidelines
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to use simple power tools (drill, hand sander, etc.) is desired, but not necessary

Physical Requirements:

  • Willing to get messy!
  • Occasional light lifting
  • Comfortable climbing ladders a plus
  • Basic home repair knowledge is desired, but not necessary

Training: Provided by Kids Room staff under the Early Learning Supervisor

Schedule Requirements: The museum is closed to the public on Mondays from September to March, and this is when shifts would be available, between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. A typical volunteer shift is 4 hours long.

Please visit marylandsciencecenter.org for more information and an application form. All volunteers must submit an application, and volunteer appointments are by interview only. All applicants (over the age of 18) must complete a background check and orientation session, prior to volunteering.

About Maryland Science Center

Location:

Mission Statement

We are the Maryland Science Center. We inspire. We empower. We engage. Let's science.

Description

The Maryland Academy of Sciences is Maryland's oldest scientific institution and one of the oldest such institutions in the entire nation. At its inception in 1797, the Academy was an amateur scientific society - members met to discuss papers on astronomy, botany, zoology, and other subjects then known as the "natural sciences."

As the Academy continued its work through the 1800s and 1900s, the group searched for a permanent location to establish a space dedicated to interactive, hands-on learning. The vision became a reality with the opening of the Academy's Maryland Science Center in 1976.

Today, and for more than 40 years, the Maryland Academy of Sciences, through its programs and exhibits at the Maryland Science Center, has demonstrated a commitment to emphasize the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). No other institution in the state reaches more teachers and students through onsite and outreach programming.

The Maryland Science Center invites you to join our Volunteer Program and celebrate science!
