ORGANIZATION: Breakthrough San Francisco

What is Breakthrough San Francisco?

Breakthrough San Francisco is an educational non-profit that supports young people in San Francisco on the path to college and trains outstanding college students for education careers. We are looking for adults, college students, high school students, and SFDS eighth graders to volunteer in our after-school program with academically motivated 5 th-8 th grade students from underserved communities around San Francisco. All programming takes place at San Francisco Day School (350 Masonic Avenue at Golden Gate Avenue). All volunteers receive extensive training and ongoing support from Breakthrough’s program staff. Our students are motivated, enthusiastic, visionary, and talented.

What will volunteers be doing?

We are looking for tutors/teachers to work with enthusiastic 5th-8th graders through our comprehensive, tuition-free after-school program that promotes academic excellence, youth leadership, and intellectual growth for students from underserved communities around San Francisco.

What is the time commitment?

The commitment is one afternoon per week (Mon from 3:30-5:30pm, Tue from 4:00-6:00pm, Wed from 3:30-5:30pm, or Thu from 4:00-6:00pm), from the week of Feb. 6 to the week of May 1.

Most volunteers spend the first part of the afternoon tutoring. On Mon. and Wed., tutors are matched with particular students for the duration of the semester to allow for consistency and relationship building. On Tue. and Thur., tutors assist students during "study hall," where students complete their assignments, practice self-advocacy skills, and work on organization.

Volunteers high school age and older who are interested in an additional leadership opportunity can apply to teach a class as well. On Mon. and Wed., volunteers can teach a self-designed elective class of 5-10 fifth and sixth grade students. On Tue. returning volunteers can teach a math class to groups of 10-12 seventh grade students. Please note that the number of teaching positions is limited, and that those opting to teach are expected to spend time outside of Breakthrough preparing for their classes.

All volunteers will be required to attend a mandatory training on Wed. Feb. 1 from 5:00-8:00pm. Teachers will be required to attend an additional training on Thur. Feb. 2 from 5:00-8:00pm.

Mission Statement

Breakthrough supports young people in San Francisco on the path to college, and trains the next generation of educators.

Description

At Breakthrough, we believe all young people should have access to an excellent education, a clear pathway to college, and highly effective teachers committed to their success. In pursuit of this vision, we provide intensive, year-round academic enrichment and support to motivated 5-12th graders with limited educational opportunities, helping them attend college, as well as ongoing college persistence support support. In addition, we train outstanding college students from across the country for education careers: developing their instructional skills, building their knowledge of pathways to teaching, and inspiring them to work in the field.

We're proud that 100% of students in our first six graduating classes are currently enrolled in college, including 93% at four-year schools. Meanwhile, 47% of our Teaching Fellows who've graduated from college in the past decade are currently working in the education sector, most of them as urban public school teachers. We are an initiative of SF Day School, a K-8 independent school that values increasing opportunity for all students, and one of 25 national affiliates of Breakthrough Collaborative.
