Every year, Multnomah County Library sponsors Summer Reading, the largest reading incentive program in Oregon. Last year over 110,000 youth participated in Summer Reading and hundreds of volunteers, primarily teens, assisted at 19 neighborhood libraries. Their job is to administer the Summer Reading (SR) game by registering children, giving away prizes and helping with recordkeeping. SR is the library's largest teen engagement program.

Become a SR Leader and help library staff coordinate our SR volunteers. This is a great mentorship opportunity for adults or teens. Leaders will not only mentor volunteers, but collaborate and communicate with volunteers and library staff. Please read further for more information.

Description of Tasks

  • assist with scheduling volunteers and making reminder calls
  • learn, then train volunteers to do SR tasks including registration, prize distribution and recordkeeping
  • mentor and give positive feedback to volunteers
  • communicate problems to staff
  • maintain and stock SR station
  • assist with administrative tasks

Minimum Age: 16 years old or entering junior year in high school in the fall or a higher grade level

Minimum Commitment: 10-12 hours/week from mid-May through early September; available most of the summer--gone no more than two weeks

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Responsible and dependable

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

  • Computer proficiency and clerical skills

  • Previous Summer Reading volunteer experience strongly preferred
  • Pass a reference check if under 18 years of age or a criminal record check if over 18

Multnomah County Library is the oldest public library west of the Mississippi River, with a history that reaches back to 1864. As Oregon's largest public library, Multnomah County Library serves nearly one-fifth of the state's population with a wide variety of programs and services.

The mission of the volunteer program is to engage community members in enhancing the services that Multnomah County Library is able to provide online, at library locations, and in the community. Volunteers are engaged throughout the organization including at all of our 19 libraries and our outreach programs.
