4th Grade Volunteer Assistant Instructor

Ocean Science Explorers Program

Ocean Discovery Institute is an award-winning science education organization that works with San Diego’s most underserved elementary, middle, and high school students to promote science and environmental stewardship.

Ocean Science Explorers (OSE) is a school and field-based educational initiative that provides early and continued exposure to ocean science. Students and teachers participate in OSE from the third through sixth grades.

  • Position Overview:
  • Assist with hands-on science lessons for underserved youth
  • Assist with outdoor field experiences to coastal wetlands and canyons
  • Lessons focused on ecology (ecosystems, habitats, food webs, resource competition)

Position Commitment:

  • One weekday morning per week (approx. 5 hours) January through March
  • Attend two trainings:
    • January 14 th, 9am-2pm
    • February 11 th, 9am-1pm

Description

The programs of Ocean Discovery Institute offer intensive, hands-on learning opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth. Programs are offered throughout the year. The programs employ three basic strategies: classroom and field-based programming in partnership with Title 1 schools, intensive after-school and summer programs, community-based habitat restoration events.
