Volunteering has changed a lot in the past few months! With the current restrictions in place, our volunteers have gotten creative and found ways to make a difference, even if from afar.

Here are some different ways you can still donate your time as a Hospice Volunteer! We are always looking for help with the following projects.

FACE MASKS

Are you avid sewer or have a sewing machine? Making face masks is one way you can still volunteer for hospice. Face masks are needed for our staff, patients, families and facilities. When you are done making the masks, our Volunteer Coordinators can pick them up curbside, or you can send them right to our office!

HOMEMADE GREETING AND BIRTHDAY CARDS

Do you like to draw or enjoy arts and crafts? Then creating greeting and birthday cards might be for you! Many of our patients are feeling lonely and isolated and would love to receive a handmade card for their birthday, or just to let them know you are thinking of them! We need cards for birthdays, holidays, and just general "thinking of you" cards!

We had great success with this past Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and had so many cards donated that we were able to deliver one to every single patient! They really enjoyed receiving the kind and cheerful messages during this trying time. This is a great opportunity for all ages!

PEN PALS

Mail is a high point of the day for so many of those in isolation! Writing letters is a great way to get to know someone and offer socialization while we are unable to visit. We will assign you to a patient who will enjoy receiving your letters and will love knowing that they are thought of.

MESSAGES TO A VETERAN

Much like Birthday and Greeting Cards. You can create messages for our Veteran’s thanking them for their service. This can be done by writing a letter or creating a card of thanks.

VETERAN TO VETERAN MESSAGES

If you also served in the Military, you can also send a message to a veteran through are veteran message program. Share your stories or just thank someone for their services from someone who know first hand what its like. This can be done remotely as well!

CANDY GRAMS

Who doesn’t enjoy candy? You can create little sweet treat bags that can be handed out to our patients and staff. Chocolates are the best and always puts a simile on someone’s face. This sweet way to give back can be done right from your own home.

WINDOW DECORATING

Our window decorating events allow our volunteers to connect with residents by decorating the outside of their windows with washable window paints! Volunteers draw pictures and share encouraging messages to show them that we are thinking of them and miss coming in to visit. Fun for all ages!

MEMORY BOOKS

Another project that can be done from the comfort of your own home! These visually stimulating books are used as a communication tool for our Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. Volunteers collate these books by finding and cutting out pictures or scenes from magazines, cards, calendars, etc. and then paste them onto sheets and put into binders. We then sit with the patients reviewing these books to see if any memory is stimulated, and many times it is. Materials are provided.

KNITTING

Are you an avid knitter or love to crochet? We are always in need of lap blankets, teddy bears, shawls and other fun crochet items. Our patients enjoy receiving these colorful gifts of warmth. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall. There is always a need to keep our loving patients warm and comfortable.

WINDOW/OUTDOOR VISITS

Many facilities are allowing window or outdoor visits, by appointment. Social distancing and mask-wearing is required.

HOME CARE PATIENT VISITS

Although our facilities are currently restricting volunteer visits, many of our home care patients are feeling lonely and isolated and requesting companionship and friendly visits. Please consider visiting someone in your area! Social distancing is practiced and PPE will be provided. Volunteers visiting home care patients are required to have a negative COVID test in their volunteer file. Contact your Volunteer Coordinator for more information and to locate a free COVID testing center in your area!
