Our STEM program is focused on Conservation and Environmental Science and preparing students to become scientific leaders that can solve complex twenty-first century problems using project-based learning approaches. Through our existing relationship with the scientific community, our educational roots, and our flexibility, Tallahassee Museum’s STEM program will bridge the gap that prevents scientists from achieving broader impacts in K-12 schools.

The key to involving scientists in K-12 education is strategic time scheduling, to accommodate their research and institutional responsibilities. Most working scientists and engineers that are interested in STEM education do not have the availability to deliver regular programming on weekdays. Therefore, we are extending an open invitation to each professional to design and deliver at least one professional development workshop about a real-life problem in their field of Conservation or Environmental Science to our instructional staff. Our STEM educators will, in turn, synthesize the new knowledge into activities/lesson plans that will guide students in 3rd-5th grade through solving the problem. These workshops will be delivered at Tallahassee Museum on a Saturday or Sunday, at the volunteer’s discretion, and should between 1-2 hours long. We are open to a volunteer group, as well as individuals.

As we will be delivering STEM programming on a weekly basis, this consistent influx of new knowledge is necessary to refresh our own perspectives on Conservation and Environmental Science. We would also like to further collaborate with these volunteers by using streaming video and photographs of their field sites in the classroom.
