NeighborLink Indianapolis is a small nonprofit committed to providing free home repairs to very low-income seniors and homeowners with disabilities. Our mission is to allow seniors to remain safely in their own homes with a measure of dignity. We need a volunteer who can help us continually recruit administrative and other volunteers to run this service. That means maintaining the open positions list, maintaining contacts with our volunteer sources (RSVP, VolunteerMatch, etc.), discussing the open positions and recruiting plans with staff members, posting jobs, attending recruiting fairs, talking to volunteers, etc.

Objective: help keep NeighborLink roles staffed with good people

Time Commitment: volunteer will determine their own calendar and commitment; min 2 hours/week

Volunteer will work with current coordinator until comfortable.

Mission Statement

NeighborLink Indianapolis mission is to help older adults and individuals with disabilities who own their own homes age in place safely and with dignity. We do this by providing home repair at no cost to the homeowner.

Description

We focus on home repairs that enable the homeowner to age in place safely, stabilize the home for years to come, and provide an improved appearance for the neighborhood at large. Many of the repairs we provide would be able to be done by the homeowner if they had the means or physical ability. By using volunteers we are able to help the homeowner as well as provide that intimate experience of truly being the hands and able-body for someone else.

Most older adults want to age in the most affordable home-the one they own. Aging in place allows older adults some level of autonomy and dignity over their own health and decisions. It allows many to remain within communities they’ve been a part of for decades. Social determinants of health, particularly including the ability to keep their home safe and accommodating to their physical needs, are among some of the most challenging barriers to aging in place.
