VOLUNTEER Would you like to make a difference?
Your energy and compassion can make all the difference in the world to a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault. As a Vera House volunteer, you can translate your concern for individuals and families in crisis into a truly meaningful effort. There are many ways to help.
Requirements for New Volunteers:
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
- A prospective volunteer must be removed from a personal crisis situation for at least one year before applying to the Volunteer Program.
- Prospective volunteers must attend an orientation session, an interview and complete an application form prior to being accepted into the training program by the Volunteer Coordinator.
- All volunteers must commit to a minimum of one year of volunteer service.
- All volunteers must take domestic violence/sexual assault basic training. Additional training is necessary if the volunteer would like to work as a sexual assault advocate, work on the support/crisis line, work at Onondaga County Family Court or with the clients at the shelters. Volunteers are expected to attend all training scheduled for their individual area.
- All training takes place at the Vera House administrative offices at 6181 Thompson Road, Suite 100, Syracuse, NY
- CRISIS CALL VOLUNTEER: Daytime coverage of crisis hotline; providing emotional support and information regarding domestic violence and sexual assault. These shifts are at our Thompson Road office during daytime hours, Monday - Friday (8:30 AM - 1 PM or 12:30 - 5 PM).
- FAMILY COURT VOLUNTEER: Assist individuals requesting orders of protection and/or custody petitions from family court. These shifts are at the Onondaga County Court House in downtown Syracuse during daytime hours, Monday - Friday (8:30 AM - 12:30 PM or 12 - 4 PM).
- SEXUAL ASSAULT VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE: Crisis intervention services to those in our community affected by sexual assault. These shifts are at area hospitals working independently during evenings, overnights or weekend hours. Approximately 4 shifts per month required.
- SHELTER VOLUNTEER: Shifts and responsibilities vary, but include: organizing donations, office clerical, child mentoring, and assisting staff with weekly groups, both adult and children.
- NON-DIRECT SERVICE VOLUNTEER: These volunteers do not work directly with clients and perform tasks such as: representing Vera House at health/volunteer fairs/events; answering phones at the Thompson Road office; help with large mailings or work on special projects (White Ribbon Campaign, Clothesline Project, etc.)
- SPEAKERS BUREAU VOLUNTEER: Provides prevention and education presentations in our community on domestic/dating violence, sexual assault/abuse, elder abuse, and/or the mission and services of Vera House. Approximately 1 - 3 presentations per month.
- FOSTER PET VOLUNTEER:Provide housing and care of pets (dogs, cats, etc.) for shelter residents or advocacy clients for a short time period. Pets are reunited with their owners once there is a safe and stable home.
