Duties:The CASA volunteer will serve primarily as an independent investigator and will represent the best interests of the child or children. Essentially, the CASA volunteer will serve as the "eyes and ears of the court."
Investigate--The CASA volunteer will interview all parties involved in the proceedings with may include, but is not limited to the following: child/children named in the case; biological parents; foster parents; Department of Children's Services Family Service Worker(s) /Team Leader(s); counselors and/or therapists; doctors and/or psychiatrists; attorneys; extended family members; teachers; and day care providers.
Report--The CASA volunteer, after interviewing all parties, will then compile a written, impartial report to submit to the court, all attorneys involved, and the Department of Children's Services Family Service Worker. On occasion, the CASA volunteer may have to testify in court. In this instance, the CASA volunteer will be apprised of proceedings and of expectations by the Program Director or Executive Director.
Monitor--The CASA volunteer will monitor the case throughout the length that there is involvement in the juvenile court. By monitoring the case the CASA volunteer will not only make home visits to the home where the child resides, but attend any/all court hearings, foster care review boards, team meetings, and other meetings as scheduled. Volunteer hours are flexible and average 10 hours per month. Average case assignment is 15 months.

Wilson County CASA provides trained volunteers who advocate in court for the stability and healthy development of abused and neglected children.
Description
Wilson County Court Appointed Special Advocates was created in 1987. Last year, Wilson County CASA served 296 of the county's child victims of neglect and/or abuse with 73 volunteer advocates, 15 volunteer board members and three full-time and one part time professional staff members.
An advocate's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
A. Independent Investigator - Under the supervision of the Program Director, interview all parties involved with case assigned, record all findings as investigation progresses, and confer with Program Director during this process. Prepare summary/ court reports. Testify in Court. (Hours can be flexible with the exception of appearing at Court hearings and Foster Care Reviews.)
B. Monitor Court proceedings.
C. Monitor permanency planning at Foster Care Reviews.
D. Comply with National CASA Association standards.
E. Maintain contact with the child/children on a monthly basis.
F. Maintain contact with the assigned Department of Children's Service Family Service Worker.
