The NYC Compost Project hosted by the Lower East Side Ecology Center works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. We offer compost education workshops, outreach opportunities and organics recycling opportunities throughout Manhattan. The project is funded and managed by the NYC Department of Sanitation's Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling.

The volunteer program with the NYC Compost Project hosted by the Lower East Side Ecology Center allows volunteers to gain first hand knowledge about composting and waste reduction initiatives in New York City. Volunteers will focus on the support of our 127 Street & Malcolm X Boulevard Food Scrap Drop-Off on Wednesdays. Volunteers will be stationed at the outdoor food scrap drop-off site where they will assist in receiving food scraps from community members, interfacing with the public and providing compost and recycling information, and aiding in set up and clean up. Volunteers will then join in processing the food scraps for composting which consists of weighing, chopping, and mixing materials. The first day of volunteering will include training. Additional opportunities for food scrap collection and outreach also exist at our downtown locations (days and times vary). Please inquire in your submission if interested.

Description

The Lower East Side Ecology Center, also known as Outstanding Renewal Enterprises, Inc., was founded in 1987. It was one of the first organizations to offer community-based recycling and composting programs in New York City, facilitated by providing innovative recycling drop-off centers. Today, the Ecology Center offers services and education for a range of environmental subjects: organics collection/composting, electronic waste recycling, and stewardship of public green spaces.

The organization focuses on providing opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about the environmental issues that the city faces. Furthermore, it also provides resources and solutions for addressing these issues.
