Hello!

Animal Rescue Konnection (ARK) is looking for someone with Public Relations and Media experience. This position is fairly narrow in scope as far as topics and audience. The scope involves making people aware of current best practices for rescues and shelters using short articles about sub-topics surrounding our scope.

The articles you write will be short, informational and persuasive. They will be written for online newsletters, social media, and sometimes newspapers. Length will vary from a few sentences to 500 words (full page single spaced) depending on the goal, audience, and where published.

You will sometimes compose articles from topics given to you or you will edit drafts of articles that are already written. For the drafts, we’d like you to "clean them up," make them succinct, check grammar, etc., so readers see ARK in a positive, credible light. You will have the guidance of the rescue's president.

We need a dependable person and preferably someone who can commit to one year. This is a nice position for a retired or semi-retired person, or someone with extra time to spare who lives in the Massachusetts or southern NH area. Knowledge of the shelter/rescue world is preferred but not required. We do want someone who cares for the well-being of animals.

With support and guidance from ARK’s president, you’ll compare the progressive methods followed by modern shelters, rescues, and pounds to the outdated and unjust policies and procedures that "old school" organizations and communities still use because they are resistant to change. We want to explain various options that are being used to save dogs instead of euthanizing them for manifesting behavioral issues that the shelter environment actually causes. We’d like to highlight "good" shelters that make a difference in their communities; share examples of how the options are successful and how they save lives; and also share examples of dogs who were euthanized as the first and only option. We want to educate the public and donors that euthanizing a dog with behavioral challenges is no longer appropriate as the first option. We believe that awareness and education will change minds.

Additional Information:

What sets ARK apart from other rescue organizations is our focus on behaviorally challenged dogs. Many are in a stressful shelter environment which causes them to degrade emotionally, physically, and behaviorally. At this point, the dogs are sometimes labeled 'unadoptable' and are at risk of euthanasia. We also serve dogs whose owners can no longer keep them or no longer want them; some actually have a euthanasia scheduled. ARK has had tremendous success re-homing at-risk dogs and want their stories to reach the general public, potential supporters, and municipalities.

Most dogs labeled unadoptable by a shelter actually do very well once in a home. ARK, along with more progressive shelters and rescues, do not judge a dog by shelter behavior alone. We have seen countless dogs thrive in a foster home where they have time to destress and prepare for adoption. They then go on to a loving family and forever home!

We hope you want to share our philosophy with the public! Our message/tagline is, "Hard to place, easy to love." Our mantra is: " A more just and humane approach for helping shelter dogs with behavioral issues is now common practice. Dogs that were once hastily labeled 'unfit for adoption’ and given no options other than euthanasia are now living proof that a dog’s fate must not be based on shelter behavior alone. Our niche is: "Finding homes for hard-to-place dogs which many organizations are unwilling or unable to do because it is such a difficult and time-consuming task."

Shelters sometimes kill dogs for the very behaviors the shelter environment induces. That should never happen. Please help us tell their stories. We need an experienced PR person who also has some knowledge of the animal rescue world to help us advocate for these often overlooked and misunderstood dogs. Please share your ideas for making the public aware of an unfair and unjust system that costs lives.

Please share your thoughts and ideas for this valuable rescue position. Thank you for looking at this volunteer opportunity!

Hard to place, easy to love.

Mission Statement

Animal Rescue Konnection (ARK) bridges the gap between dogs in need and the organizations that can help them find new homes. We specialize in matching breeds that are hard to place due to discrimination and labeling with progressive shelters and rescues willing to take on the challenge of taking in these 'at risk’ dogs and giving them what they need to succeed. We are not a shelter. Rather, we are a networking organization enabling us to save more dogs’ lives by collaborating with existing rescues and shelters. We focus on at risk dogs that are behaving poorly in the shelter or holding facility and/or do not do well on their behavioral evaluation due to stress. Since our founding in May 2012, we have helped save more than 400 at risk dogs in need of transfer, by finding them a shelter or rescue and giving them a second chance at the life they deserve.

Description

A small organization that achieves a lot because of the commitment, dedication, business, and common sense of a handful of volunteers.

Too many dogs were being euthanized under the guise of labels like 'unadoptable’ and 'not place-able’ without evaluating the dog as an individual, looking at the dog’s stresses, looking at the physical environment or enlisting a training regimen. We decided to do something about it.

We focus on helping dogs that are displaying behavior symptoms during their confinement. Why? Because, in our experience, these dogs manifest entirely differently in new environments, after they can de-stress from the trauma of being misplaced or with proven training regimens.

These dogs can be saved if only other shelters and rescues knew about them. Leveraging our vast connections in the rescue community, we fill a huge void collaborating between progressive shelters and rescues and dogs whose time up or were not doing well in their current environment.
