The Open Door Learning Center at Lake Street is looking for community volunteers to help adult learners as they study for the GED, a high school equivalency test. Anyone who enjoys helping others learn is welcome to apply; prior experience with GED is not necessary. As classroom assistants, you would be working with one or two students to help them with specific reading, writing, or math assignments.
The class goes from 5:30 to 8:30, Monday through Thursday. We are ideally looking for volunteers who can commit to coming one night a week for at least 2 months.
********************************************************************
Some of the GED areas include (you can let us know the areas where you feel most comfortable):
Mathematical reasoning (math with a focus on word problems and problem-solving)
Science reading (mostly reading and analyzing articles about science, not too technical summaries of studies/experiments/theories, etc)
Social Studies reading: (mostly reading informational texts and primary documents related to U.S. history and civics)
Fiction Reading: (reading and analyzing stories)
Writing: Writing an argument analysis essay, and explaining whether an argument is well-supported; writing a description of a scientific experiment

If you have questions or would like to apply, please contact Vadim (the evening GED Teacher) at (612) 483-1763 or vrubinchik@mnliteracy.org
We look forward to hearing from you!
