What Is the New York City Urban Debate League?
We are a small non profit that works to provide underprivileged lower, middle, and high school kids with education on political issues via our club. Kids participate afterschool and during the summer, completely free of cost and are educated in the way of debate. Debate clubs, typically, are organized by more well off, educated communities; but by engaging with mainly minority communities in Harlem, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx we help tear down economic, educational, and racial barriers by providing pathways to a venture that they might not have had the opportunity to consider before. In addition, we provide students with different cultural and ethical decisions in their debates by having students of various economic and racial backgrounds interact with one another, despite our focus on those with less chances.
What is your role as Judge?
On Saturdays when we host our tournaments, children engage competitively and intensely in their craft. Your role as Judge is to manage a few things, they include but are not limited to:
- Making sure students speeches are concise and stay within their given alloted time
- Taking notes of their arguments and effectively scoring their presentation using a grading grid
- Being open-minded despite any pre-existing beliefs

Mission Statement
We aim to provide the highest-quality debate opportunities that develop young adults into informed, engaged and courageous citizens. Every school and every student should have access to the best debate education opportunities.
Description
In 2011, there were less than ten schools in New York City with debate teams. We were founded to change this statistic. Today, over 2000 students and 140 schools participate in monthly debates. Every day we support debate practices. Every week we offer Saturday workshops. Every weekend our debaters travel to local, regional, and national tournaments. Every month we host public debate nights. Every summer we host debate camps from the first day of summer to the last day of summer.
Over 90% of our high school seniors graduate and are accepted to college each year. Many of our graduates also receive full or partial scholarships to the college of their choice because of their participation in debate.
We were honored by the White House as one of the nation’s top after school programs.
