MLK

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch of the Oakland Public Library is looking for volunteers to help staff with an after school meal and snack program.

Volunteers are needed Tuesdays/Thursdays 2:45-4:00 pm and Wednesdays/Fridays 1:15-2:30 pm.

Thanks to Children's Empowerment, an approved sponsor for the Child and Adult Care Food Program, a number of OPL branch libraries are able to distribute food to youth after school. We’re looking for volunteers to help OPL staff with set up, food distribution, and clean up. Candidates should be at least 16 years old and be willing to serve food (no experience is necessary). A three-month commitment to serve at least one day each week is required.

Mission Statement

Your Oakland Public Library empowers all people to explore, connect, and grow.

Description

The Oakland Public Library is a part of the City of Oakland, and has been in existence since 1878. Our locations currently include 16 branches, a Main Library, 6 Teen Zones, the Second Start Adult Literacy Program, a Tool Lending Library and the African-American Museum and Library. We also operate the Books for Wider Horizons program that recruits, trains, and places volunteer story readers in preschool or childcare centers throughout the City of Oakland, and offer many other special services for residents of Oakland and California.

We are supported by a lively Friends of the Library group and by the Library Advisory Commission, as well as by local Friends' groups around the city.
