ORGANIZATION: Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library

Volunteers in this position work under the supervision and direction of the RPL Literacy Coordinator. Volunteers may work at the Literacy Coordinator’s office space, or offsite at the Goodwill warehouse on Paul Road in Chili, or may travel throughout Rochester delivering books and restocking book distribution sites.

Duties may include:

Rough sorting books at Goodwill warehouse or other sites.

Sorting books into age level and other categories at Literacy Coordinator’s office space.

Packing and shelving books into selected areas.

Cleaning books as needed before sorting and packing.

Helping Literacy Coordinator keep track of numbers of books distributed.

Delivering books to book distribution sites and restocking shelves.

Assisting at public events where books are given away, including the Rochester Public Market.

Mission Statement

The Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library conducts essential fundraising and provides valued programs to enhance and promote the Rochester Public Library.

Description

Contributions to the Friends & Foundation of the RPL augment public support and are used to expand library collections and programs and services; to support capital improvements of library facilities; and to support professional resources, services, and staff. Funds are also raised to demonstrate the viability of innovative projects for which public funds may subsequently be budgeted.

The Friends & Foundation of the RPL raises funds through:

  1. gifts to an annual fundraising campaign
  2. special project grants from corporations, individuals, charitable foundations, and government funding sources
  3. earnings generated by a permanent endowment fund
  4. individual gifts made through wills and trusts, and
  5. income from the sale of books and gift items through the Library Store both online and at the Central Library downtown.
