Volunteer Tutors Needed in the Lower East Side!

BECOME A VOLUNTEER TUTOR WITH EDUCATIONAL ALLIANCE TEEN CENTER @ THE MANNY CANTOR CENTER Empower a young person to succeed by tutoring in core subject areas to help them achieve their goals this school year and beyond!

WHAT IS YOUR COMMITMENT AS A TUTOR?

  • Work one-on-one or in small group setting with students in a core subject area to provide academic support

  • Available weekly (M- Th ) from either 4-5pm or 5-6pm

  • Serve as a role model, providing guidance and support

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

  • Students are provided with a schedule of subjects to get the extra help they need

  • Tutoring takes place from 4:00-6pm Monday-Thursday (usually in a one-hour block)

  • Subjects needed: English, Math (Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Trignometry ), Science (Earth Sciece & Living Environment), History (Global, US), Regents/Test Prep

HOW TO GET STARTED!

  • Complete our Volunteer Application (http://mannycantor.org/volunteer/application/) and include the following info in the additional information section:

  • Your availability ( M- Th , 4-6pm)

  • What subjects you feel comfortable tutoring High School students in. Please be specific (i.e. type of science, type o f math, etc.)  

  • Prospective tutors will have a phone screening call, background check and reference check

  • Be available to attend Tutor Orientation on Thursday, October 6, 201

APPLY TO BE A TUTOR IF...

  • College Graduat es (or current college students, must be 18+)

  • You have experience or willingness to build a working relationship with youth

  • Strong knowledge of the subject(s) area that you will be tutoring

Description

Our commitment to the diversity of the Lower East Side is reflected in our programming: Head Start classrooms sit alongside our private preschool; the Weinberg Center for Balanced Living creates community for older adults of all backgrounds and abilities; our fitness center is utilized by neighborhood residents of all ethnicities, income levels, and ages through an innovative tiered membership model. The Educational Alliance Art School uses the study and mastery of fine arts to forge connections between students and master teachers. Afterschool programs serve community needs for recreation, fitness, education, and college preparation. Community and cultural programming invites deep conversation and calls to action.

The Manny Cantor Center is the flagship building of Educational Alliance, a community-based organization offering a wide range of programs that integrate education, social services, arts and recreation throughout the Lower East Side and East Village. Created to assist Eastern European Jews immigrating to NYC, it has been serving the area since 1889. Educational Alliance has grown and changed as the Lower East Side has; now serving the diverse population that currently resides here.
