ORGANIZATION: St. Joseph's Soup Kitchen

  • 36 people are interested

St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen (SJSK) is an all-volunteer, independent charity located in in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. We operate every Saturday, providing approximately 400 meals to those in need. In addition to provide great meals, we offer clothing distributions, and partner with another organization to provide healthcare and substance abuse assistance. While we have still maintained our original name so our guests know where to get some great grub, we are not religiously affiliated with church, and all folks of all beliefs are welcome to eat, volunteer, and contribute.

In June 2015, our organization became an independent 501(c)3, and have made great strides to create a well-organized and well-run soup kitchen, while still maintaining our casual and fun environment. The most important question we ask new volunteers is "Did you have fun?" Often we get a positive response asking to come back.

But we still have a long way to go. We’re hoping you can help. We need your help to improve the finance operations of the organization. Our past "finance guy", Chris, has become our Executive Director, and needs folks to help develop a great finance function. We’re looking for professionals to help build the finance and accounting capabilities, research and understand our tax-reporting responsibilities, streamline our current reporting timelines, and just help with finance needs.

Your work would not only benefit our organization, but many other soup kitchens. SJSK is held up as a model for other soup kitchens to follow, and we hope what we develop here can be easily replicated elsewhere. We’re looking for you to join a team of finance professionals that can help with the following areas:

  • Help us develop an accounting system for the organization ( Currently everything is handled in MS Excel, but we’re investing in Quickbooks this fall)
  • Develop financial reporting for various stakeholders (management, foundations, etc)
  • Help with developing databases, primarily for donors
  • Help with developing system to send tax-deduction letters to our donors
  • IRS and New York State (Tax) Compliance and Reporting Requirements
  • Inventory tracking & management
  • Budgeting & forecasting
  • Research non-profit accounting best-practices
  • Possibly help with improving our "office" operations
  • Most importantly: We want your ideas. What we create is all very fluid, and we’ll probably discover needs as we progress

We’re looking for volunteers who not only can help develop the "big picture" capabilities, but also are willing to help with the "less sexy" needs such as data entry, database management, and other "nuts & bolts" needs.

We require that you have an accounting or finance background with 3+ years experience. CPA, CFA, or other certifcations are a plus. Process development & improvement professionals with 5+ years are welcome. Non-profit background is not required.

Unfortunately, we cannot take undergraduate or recent graduates. We need folks who can hit the ground running.

We ask that you be in the New York City area and able to volunteer on-site. We’re looking for folks to help out for a couple hours on Saturdays to help building things up, and then (hopefully) have built something great it doesn’t take too much of a time commitment to maintain everything. Also, Chris may want to have Finance Team meeting 1-2 times a month to discuss initiatives.

So, if you’re looking for a fun and creative volunteer opportunity that can have a tremendous impact, and are willing to take payment in smiles & Thank Yous, then press that pretty "I want to help!" button, and tell us a little about your background and how you think you can help. Also, please provide a resume or LinkedIn profile with your reply.

Mission Statement

Our mission is simple: to feed the hungry and the homeless in a warm and welcoming environment every Saturday afternoon.

Description

St. Joe’s Soup Kitchen is an independent, all-volunteer organization that serves 400-500 meals every Saturday to New York City’s homeless and hungry. We have been in operation for 40 years, relying on volunteers, local businesses, and the generosity of the community to help us continue our mission of providing hot, nutritious meals to those in need.

Not all of our guests are homeless. Some of our guests are individuals who are unable to hold a job due to mental illness, some of them are seniors from the community, while others are minimum-wage workers whose pay doesn’t cover both food and lodging in the city. Others are temporarily out of work and come to us to tide them over.

St. Joseph's Soup Kitchen serves our guest through our weekly meal program, our used clothing distribution center, and our partnership with Project Renewal to provide health & substansce abuse services.
