Mission Statement
The ALS Association (ALSA) is the only national not-for-profit health agency dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. When these cells die, voluntary muscle control and movement dies with them. Patients in the later stages of the disease are totally paralyzed, yet in most cases, their minds remain sharp and alert. ALS struck Yankee Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig in 1939. He died two years later, but ALS is still commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The mission of the Connecticut Chapter of The ALS Association to be the central source in Connecticut for comprehensive services and education of ALS patients, families and caregivers. All services are offered at no cost.
Description
The ALS Association Connecticut Chapter was first founded in 1988 by a group of volunteers. In the mid-1990s as a result of a local fundraiser, the chapter hired its first staff person. Since that time, we have grown steadily. The ALS ASsociation CT Chapter is the only not-for-profit voluntary health organziatin in the state dedicated solely to the fight against ALS - we cover all the bases - research, patient & community services, public education and advocacy.
