Mission Statement
The Elders Learning Community is a free arts and education program for underserved seniors in West Contra Costa County. Our mission is to promote lifelong learning and creative growth. We match community volunteers with seniors and together, they work on creative learning projects such as art, music, reading, computers, and more!
Description
The Elders Learning Community (ELC) is creating a new model for aging - one that promotes self-discovery and empowerment. We are an arts, education, and self-discovery program for low-income, socially isolated seniors in West Contra Costa County. Our philosophy is that learning and creativity lead to increased independence and help prevent the depression, dementia, and social isolation associated with aging.
The ELC was founded in 2005 by local community and human rights advocate Amy Rock to address the effects of disengagement impacting the lives of so many West County Seniors. Our program connects amazing trained volunteers from the community with senior participants. Together, they develop learning projects - art, music, science, computers, history, memoir writing, reading, the ideas are endless! We also hold monthly groups. Senior participants, ELC staff, and our dedicated volunteers are what make up our "community of learners."
We currently serve seniors over age 60 who are low-income, frail, or homebound in West Contra Costa County. They are often the elders who can't make it to the average senior center due to financial or health barriers. We use a humanistic model for learning that is based on participants' unique interests and capabilities.
The Elders Learning Community also provides light case management in the areas of transportation, food assistance, and medical referrals.
