Summary:

The Community Engagement Intern works alongside the Senior Manager of Community Engagement, Operations team and the Development team to understand the operations, programs and development of a transitional housing program. He or she will assist with daily operations and administrative tasks as well as provide support before and during the busy holiday season.

Time Commitment:

This position is designed for 20-30 hours per week (based on availability). One night a month the Community Engagement Intern will cover one overnight shift (9 pm - 7 am) and his/her shifts will switch to accommodate the time spent on site.

Specific Responsibilities:

Community Engagement:

  • Assist with volunteer scheduling.
  • Manage all volunteer milestone gift giving.
  • Communicate with volunteers and in-kind donors about getting involved at Calvary.
  • Maintain a clean and organized environment of the in-kind storage areas.
  • Manage thanksgiving mailing going out to all active volunteers
  • Table at local volunteer interest events.
  • Work on special projects as assigned by the Senior Manager of Community Engagement.
  • Support the Senior Manager of Community Engagement with administrative tasks such as reporting volunteer hours, scanning and saving volunteer files, and filling out in-kind paperwork.

Development:

  • Support the development team with administrative tasks prior to the Hope Awards Dinner (HAD), our biggest fundraising event of the year. The time spent preparing for this event will increase as the internship progresses (and as we get closer to the date of the event).

  • Assist with mailings including invites to the HAD and acknowledgment letters.

  • Attend the HAD and provide on-site assistance to the development team.

Program Supervision:

  • Cover one overnight shift a month.

  • Cover the front desk as needed.

  • Manage the LEAP break from 2:30 - 3:30 pm by setting out the snack, logging residents onto the computers and answering program questions.

  • Support LEAP and Step Up DC by assisting with data entry and data management.

  • Enforce house rules and offer support to the residents while sitting at the front desk and while acting in a volunteer capacity on site.

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in weekly check ins with the Community Engagement Coordinator and weekly meetings with the Calvary staff.

  • Other duties as assigned to provide full support to the Community Engagement Coordinator and the development team.

Specific Skills Required:

  • Excellent communication skills (especially writing skills) and ability to communicate in a professional manner with Calvary residents, staff, volunteers and donors.
  • Ability to manage projects from start to finish and to discern when to check in with a supervisor (versus continuing using own judgement).
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects at once and decipher which project takes precedence.
  • Confidence to make decisions when needed.
  • Creativity and initiative to propose and manage projects that would be helpful for staff or volunteers.
  • We’re specifically looking for an upper classman in college (or a recent grad) who is extremely organized, detail oriented, a strong writer and a quick learner.
