Collect native seed + cut cottonwood seedlings at Heritage Village Park

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Friends of the Mississippi River

Located just 15 minutes south of St. Paul in Inver Grove Heights, Heritage Village Park is a 50-acre site on the banks of the Mississippi River. N ow owned by the City of Inver Grove Heights, the site was a former rail yard until the mid-1980s . In 2004, a master plan for the site was prepared that would transform the site from a contaminated waste site, locally used for dumping trash, to a community amenity featuring recreational, cultural, and natural attractions, including abundant natural areas, playgrounds a bike path and more.

Volunteers will work along side FMR staff to collect native prairie grass seed and cut cottonwood seedlings. This native grass seed will be replanted at Heritage Village Park and neighboring Rock Island Swing Bridge Park. Volunteers may also be asked to participate in other restoration tasks that are needed to help improve this site.

Space is limited and registration is required. Please visit http://fmr.org/events/2016/10/08/collect-native-seed-cut-cottonwood-seedlings-heritage-village-park for more information about this event.

Mission Statement

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) engages people to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities region.

Description

Friends of the Mississippi River is proud to work with roughly 3,000 volunteers annually.

We keep volunteering simple, fun and satisfying -- there are no applications, and you can sign up for one event or several. We list events especially in need of volunteers here on VolunteerMatch.com, but maintain a full calendar of 60+ events a year at www.fmr.org/events.

Our project work includes conservation and restoration of natural areas and habitat, education on watershed protection issues, and organizing activities that connect the public to the Mississippi River.
