Adults of all ages are encouraged to participate. Segue supports students at a most critical crossroads by helping them decide what to do with their lives. The mission of Segue is to empower and motivate students to explore, find, and act on their life's path. Segue broadens access to higher education and trainings, especially for groups that have not historically had access to higher education. The Segue Program connects the workplace community with the schools; engages community members to come into the classrooms and share their career path stories and wisdom learned from real life experiences in the work world. To students, these speakers are honest brokers, living proof that: (1) the choices they (students) are making now will affect all the rest of their lives; (2) more effort now = more options in their future; and (3) if the speakers can do it, so can I (a student). In the face of a deep hopelessness, many students, especially those most at risk, come to see that honorable careers are truly available to them. Segue gives students hope and reason to put in the effort, now. There exists today a national foundational crisis as schools largely ignore a basic prerequisite for productive adulthood: knowledge of career options. How can anyone make a choice without first knowing what are their choices? About the need for Segue, Dr. James Meznek, Chancellor of the Ventura Community College District, advised: "Segue provides an often-missing link to the workforce that students desperately need. It motivates and inspires them to act on behalf of their own futures. It's just the type of efficient and easily replicable program that community colleges have been calling for. My recommendation is that you implement it as quickly and broadly as you can." With the efficacy of the pilot program and its online self-scheduling system now demonstrated quantitatively, Segue is ready to begin a phase-based dissemination throughout the country beginning in this county. Segue shows students the light at the end of the tunnel and a path to get there.
