A self portrait by one of our students.

We are currently looking for writing/literary arts teachers for our literary programs.

Bookworms: This is our book club for young readers. The club meets once per month on during the school year. Read thrilling books and do fun activities with elementary school aged children to build their love of reading. Authors may visit the program.

Beyond Words: This book club is for teens. The club meets once per month during the school year. Engage middle and high school students in reading books with themes relevant to today's social topics. Authors may visit the program.

Arts 101: Arts 101 is our introductory arts program. Students complete several literary arts exercises. You will have the opportunity to create programming to teach our students different writing disciplines and engage them in projects related to self-expression/exploration, current events, and other subjects of interest. You will work with the students to create works suitable for a show/exhibit at the end of the year. You may work alongside a visual teaching artist.

We are looking for writers/teachers that can teach various literary arts disciplines - poetry, short essay, biography, etc. Please contact us whether you are interested in teaching for the entire school year, a semester, or a particular subject/discipline for a limited time. We are open to the right teacher or combination of teachers.

At Artsmith, we are dedicated to providing arts education to young people in the Bronx who have little or no opportunity to experience the arts. We know that the arts provide our students with a great and safe place to learn creativity, experiment and take risks, develop discipline, and build confidence. Arts education should not be a question of access. You must believe in this mission to volunteer with us!

Email resume to tricia.smith@artsmith.org to be considered.

** During this time of COVID-19, programs will be delivered remotely. Volunteers must be able to teach and engage students over digital platforms such as Zoom. **

About ARTSMITH INC

Location:

4165 WHITE PLAINS RD STE 1563, BRONX, NY 10466, US

Mission Statement

To provide quality arts programming to young people from the Bronx that will enable them to learn about themselves, others, and the world around them; explore topics and issues that affect them as they age and mature; and inspire them to dream beyond the image that is often presented to them about who they will and can become.

Description

New York City, one of the most racially diverse cities in the nation, has one of the most segregated public school systems when it comes to race and poverty. Children living in the city’s low-income neighborhoods, a significant amount in parts of the Bronx, have unequal access to the arts.

Artsmith is non-profit organization that provides quality arts-centered programming to underserved Bronx youth from the ages of 8-18. Many studies supported by education scholars and policy-makers, show that the Arts is necessary for providing a well-rounded education. We use the Arts to counter the widening gap between the socioeconomically elite and the disadvantaged. At Artsmith we believe that every child, in spite of socio-economic status, should have access to the Arts. The arts allow us all to stretch the limits of what we view as possible, and for those whose paths are filled with societally imposed obstacles, this is particularly meaningful. The Arts can give a voice to the silenced. We want to help tomorrow’s leaders to find their voices and participate in the conversations that will shape their communities and the world.
