ORGANIZATION: First Graduate

After School Group
A group of our middle school students with their Academic Coach

First Graduate Mission:

Our mission is to help San Francisco students become the first in their families to graduate from college, well prepared to begin meaningful careers. We make a 10-12 year commitment to each student, beginning the summer after 6th grade through the completion of college.

Become a Mentor

Looking to mentor First Graduate middle school students who want to become the first in their families to attend college?

Currently, First Graduate serves 469 students and 106 of them are middle school students who are looking for a mentor like YOU! Our students from Everett Middle School are ready to take on the challenge and become the first in their families to attend college!

Volunteer Responsibilities:

As a First Graduate Mentor, you work 1:1 with a middle school student and provide them with the academic guidance they deserve. This rewarding mentoring experience will allow you build meaningful relationships with First Graduate students that are in need of extra support. Overall, if you are passionate or interested in doing your small part of leveling the educational playing fields then please consider mentoring a First Graduate student today.

  • Provide homework support for your mentee during First Graduate afterschool program
  • Work 1:1 with a student to create academic goals for the semester and support them through their progress
  • Help students develop the study and organizational skills that will allow them to be successful in school
  • Build a meaningful relationship with your student that encourages their academic curiosity
  • Provide support when students need that additional guidance

Academic Mentors will be trained and supported by a First Graduate staff throughout your volunteering time. It is our goal to ensure that you start working with students feeling confident, and always have a staff member present. All mentors (18+ of age) will be required to complete a Livescan background check (for which you will be reimbursed) before they volunteer with First Graduate students.

Time Commitment:

Volunteers have the freedom of creating their own schedule but we do ask that all mentors meet with their mentee at least once a week for an hour during Everett's afterschool program.

Denman Middle School:
Monday and Wednesday: 4:00-5 pm
Once or twice a week (Late January-March 22)

We highly encourage you to volunteer if:

You have any previous mentor or tutor experience, however, it is not a requirement. Currently, we have volunteers from all different backgrounds because we believe that everyone is able to offer our students different experiences and knowledge!
