Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia is seeking volunteers to assist with Power Hour this school year. For one hour after school, assist Club members with homework or tutor members in a specific subject needing additional study. Help kids get the best start they can this school year. Members range in age from 6 to 18, so whatever your academic skill level, you can be the difference for a child.
Club locations in Portsmouth, Suffolk, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Exmore, and Franklin.
Power Hour Objectives
- Become self-directed, resourceful, and independent learners
- Turn in homework assignments on time
- Improve organizational and time management skills
- Improve academic performance
Homework Helpers Responsibilities:
- Ask members about his or her day at school
- Ask if he or she has homework to do
- Ask if members need help
- Respond to members’ homework questions
- Help keep members on task and engaged in their work
- Provide guidance with organization and critical thinking skills
- Check members’ homework
- Assist staff with member supervision
- Encourage members without homework to read quietly
Tutor Responsibilities: Tutors work one on one or in small groups with members to address areas that need special attention or improvement.
- Refer to staff for member or group to be paired with
- Go over material to be worked on with member(s) before getting started
- Answer questions and give examples of similar material
- Keep member(s) on task and engaged with the subject requiring additional study
