UWGKC is seeking volunteers from all backgrounds to staff interactive booths regarding topics including mortgage, transportation, daycare, and others. The participants (high school sophomores) will visit your booth, make decisions about what they can afford and budget in one month of adulthood!

The hands-on simulation gives high school sophomores a taste of the real world-complete with occupations, salaries, spouses, student loan debts, credit card debts, and medical insurance payments.

Students are challenged to select housing, transportation, food, household necessities, clothing, day care, and other wants and needs while building a budget. Mad City Money allows participants to make mistakes-and suffer the consequences of their decisions-in a realistic, but safe, environment.

The simulation provides students realistic examples that connect the decisions they make tothe economic consequences of those decisions. Most importantly, students learn the link between post-secondary education and life-long success potential.

Mission Statement

To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of Greater Kansas City.

Description

Our Work:

United Way of Greater Kansas City’s work is focused on community impact, seeking to improve lives and strengthen communities. While United Way continues its historic role as a fundraiser and investor in effective human services programs, we know we must also do more.

United Way recognizes that there are underlying community challenges that cannot be solved by dollars alone, so we are focusing efforts in several key areas to make even greater impact. In addition to the tremendous contributions our funded programs make, we must place even more emphasis on being a year-round, positive force in community. United Way is doing more than just raising and investing dollars, but also working collaboratively with a whole range of community partners to achieve lasting results.

Education :: Children and youth attain full-potential.

Income :: People achieve financial independence and stability.

Health :: People and their neighborhoods are safe, healthy and thriving.
