Help out our program staff for our annual Registration Day! Our Adult Education program offers free GED and ESL classes and we receive more and more interest in our course offerings each year!

Volunteers will help staff with maintaining the line, speaking with students, directing them to the approrpiate staff member, assisting students with filling out application forms, and other tasks as needed.

Due to the diverse community we have in East Harlem, it's a plus if you are bilingual and also speak Spanish, French, Arabic, or Chinese! Our staff will need assistance with communicating with some students interested in our ESL courses and volunteers may need to help with translating.

About Union Settlement

Mission Statement

Union Settlement is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, we have brought education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.

Description

Founded more than a century ago, the Settlement has built a strong tradition of responsiveness to community need - developing child health stations early in the century, advocating for equal opportunity in sanitation, public housing and education from its inception. During the Great Depression, the Settlement provided food and employment and hope to many destitute families, preparing them for a better future. The Settlement has grown to become one of the largest human service agencies in East Harlem, serving more than 12,000 individuals on a daily basis out of 16 community locations with essential services including child care, mental health, education, care for the elderly, HIV/Aids services, adult education and much more.
