YourWords STL is a volunteer, after-school, tutoring organization dedicated to teaching St. Louis youth how to amplify one's voice through writing.

In our first year of operation (2015-2016), we worked with a fantastic, motivated group of boys and young men aged 16-19 at Marygrove in Florissant. Marygrove is a school and residence with therapeutic programming for children all over St. Louis who have been abandoned or abused and have nowhere else to turn. The campus is located on 44 acres of greenery, overlooking the Missouri river.

We will continue to work with this group in our second year (2016-2017). We will be at Marygrove from 4-5:30PM on Wednesdays for the fall and spring semesters.

Each week we do about 30 minutes of general homework help according to the student's needs that day, followed by a 45-minute writing exercise led by one of our published authors/poets. Tutors do NOT need to be experienced writers or teachers. We are seeking a wide variety of backgrounds; an enthusiasm for reading and writing and compassion for under-served youth are the basic requirements for tutoring with YourWords STL.

We will provide tutor orientation, and our creative writing program director will lead the sessions. We also offer free optional continuing education opportunities for tutors throughout the year. To get started, Marygrove requires a (free) background check and application. We can also provide free transportation for college students who tutor if needed. Finally, we are happy to provide documentation of your service hours if needed for a school requirement.

Ideally we are seeking tutors who can attend most of the weekly sessions, as this provides for a valuable mentoring relationship to develop. However, we also always need tutors who can attend sporadically to fill in for our regular tutors when they need to take a day off.
