Join SIA for a weekend working out on the beautiful Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge as we improve habitat and connectivity for wildlife! FOR MORE INFO, OR TO REGISTER, PLEASE VISIT:https://skyislandalliance.givezooks.com/events/fence-removal-at-buenos-aires-nwr BACKGROUND
The 117,464-acre Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1985 for the benefit of the endangered masked bobwhiteq quail. For many years, volunteers and staff have been working to remove old barbed-wire fences from with in the boundaries of the refuge; fences left over from pre-refuge days. SIA will be helping to continue this important work meant to allow wildlife to more easily traverse the refuge landscape.
PROJECT SCHEDULE
- 1:030 PM Friday: Meet up with SIA staff at our office (406 S 4th Ave) for a ride or to caravan out to our camp at BANWR.
- 3:30 PM Friday: If you are driving yourself to the camp, you can meet us after 3:30 PM
- 8:00 AM Saturday: We will get to work nice and early.
- 8:00 AM Sunday: Another early start to our wirk, but we will finish up by early afternoon and try to be back to Tucson by 5:00 PM.
- You will need water bottles that you can re-fill throughout the project, plus all the food you’ll need for a weekend away from home. We will have access to kitchen and bathroom facilities, but not necessarily refrigeration, so bring a cooler for your food.
- Sturdy footwear (ex. hiking boots) with closed toes is a necessity, as is sun protection (ex. wide-brimmed hat, sunblock, long sleeved shirt and long pants)
- Site background and activity instruction plus all tools and gloves needed for the work.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- This project will be led by Bryon Lichtenhan. Contact him with any questions at bryon@skyislandalliance.org or 520-307-6728.
