Partners for Rural Health in the Dominican Republic, a 501(c)3 organization, is looking for volunteers for its January, 2017 medical trip.

The trip will take place from December 31 st to January 12 th. We are looking for:

  • Doctors;
  • Nurse practitioners;
  • Nurses;
  • Dentists;
  • Spanish-English/Creole-English interpreters;
  • Pharmacists;
  • Physical therapists;
  • Clinic support staff, working with clients; and
  • Intake staff.

Responsibilities: Over the course of this trip, volunteers will conduct clinics in rural areas of the Dominican Republic, under the direction of PRHDR’s coordinators.

Physicians will consult students or RNs in their client evaluations. Physicians will be teaching elements of a thorough assessment, differential diagnosis, and critical thinking skills to develop the plan of care. According to the physician’s clinical judgment, they may examine the patient, explain the diagnosis to the student and develop the treatment plan.

Nurses, nursing students and other health volunteers will take patient histories, perform physical assessments and consult with licensed health providers about the plan of care.

All volunteers will help in fundraising for medical supplies and medications, assist with packing supplies and helping to organize them. Volunteers will load supplies onto trucks daily, and, at the end of the day, reorganize supplies and pack for the next day.

By participating in this program, you can help offer vital medical care, while gaining insight into the lives and culture of these wonderful, rural communities. Spanish-speaking skills are an advantage, but not necessary as PRHDR provides interpreters.

PRHDR was established in 1995 by the University of Southern Maine, College of Nursing and Health Professions, and has been working in the same communities in the Dominican Republic for over 20 years. We have a very strong relationship with the communities where we work. During that time, we have provided healthcare to over 15,000 people.

Mission Statement

To engage, empower and educate the rural villagers we serve through our health missions and to support cross-cultural service-learning by collaborating with educational organizations and Dominican partners in the delivery of health services to under-served populations in the northern Dominican Republic.

Description

PRHDR is a Maine based, 501c3 nonprofit corporation (non-membership). The current organization grew out of a partnership program founded in 1995 to promote health in rural areas of the northern Dominican Republic while offering international service-learning opportunities for volunteers and students in the health professions.

PRHDR missions provide community health clinics in villages twice a year, staffed by volunteer health professionals; Dominican partners; faculty members from participating educational institutions (Univ. of Maine System Schools of Nursing and Language Departments, UNE School of Medicine, Husson Univ., etc.); Peace Corp members; experienced volunteer medical interpreters; and students. Returning bi-annually to the same villages to provide continuity of care to residents who would otherwise have no or limited access to health services, PRHDR also delivers health and pharmaceutical supplies, donated or purchased, to the community sites, providing adequate amounts between missions for individuals served. PRHDR also trains selected residents in the villages as Health Promoters to monitor at-risk clients, promote the safe use of medicines, and help maintain personal health between missions.
