Volunteer to serve meals to hungry children this summer in your city!

Sign up to help FOCUS reduce childhood hunger in Washington D.C.! We are looking for volunteers each weekday throughout the summer to assemble, deliver, and serve meals to children. Meals will be prepared at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church--all volunteers will meet at this location. Children are most welcome to volunteer but must be supervised by an adult. Volunteer all summer long to help children in need, right here in Washington D.C.!

According to DC Hunger Solutions, 13.2% of all households in the District of Columbia are food insecure. While the nation’s federal nutrition programs have a wide reach in Washington, D.C., too many children continue to slip through the nutrition safety net. Among the 13.2 percent of District of Columbia households struggling with hunger, 4.9 percent were considered to have "very low food security." People that fall into this USDA category had more severe problems, experiencing deeper hunger and cutting back or skipping meals on a more frequent basis for both adults and children.

Location: All volunteers, regardless of shift, will meet at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2815 36th St NW, Washington, DC, 20007

Dates: Monday through Friday, June 27 to September 2

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (First Shift) and 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Second Shift)

Over 49 million people in the United States struggle with hunger because they do not have regular access to nutritious and affordable food. 15 million of these people are children, who are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of food insecurity. Most of these children come from middle-class or working-poor families - families who struggle to make ends meet. Each month these families are faced with a difficult decision: pay the rent or buy groceries. And in this situation, paying the rent always wins - because it is easier to be hungry than homeless.

Good nutrition is vital to childhood development and is important in establishing a foundation for "future physical and mental health, academic achievement, and economic productivity" (Feeding America). Child hunger increases during summer months, when students who often rely on free and reduced lunch programs suddenly find themselves missing one or two main meals a day.

This summer, through our Summer Feeding Program, FOCUS will serve 46,000 meals in eight cities across seven states. And this is just the beginning. We hope to expand this program each year to new cities and sites using our core methodology of providing high quality, nutritious meals to children when they need it the most. Of course, we can't do this without your help.

To accomplish this goal, we need you! Join FOCUS' strong network of volunteers and Orthodox parishes across the country to serve children in need this summer. FOCUS will provide all necessary program oversight, staffing, insurance coverage and all food items. We encourage you, your family, and your organization or parish to get actively involved! If you do not live in one of the cities listed below, consider bringing a group from your organization or parish to one of our target cities. Your group will help serve children during the day and then you will be free to explore the city or assist with other hands-on FOCUS projects.

Our additional meal sites are in the following cities:

  • Pittburgh, PA
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • San Gabriel, CA
  • Long Beach, CA
  • Fairfax County, CA
  • Detroit, MI
  • Columbus, OH

We hope to see you this summer!
