ORGANIZATION: FRIENDS OF THE BOCA RATON PUBLIC LIBRARY

  • 3 people are interested

The Friends of the Boca Raton Library is a cultural "arm" of the two public libraries in Boca Raton, FL. An Art Gallery was established by the Board of the Friends in 2009 on the second floor of the Spanish River branch, and is popular venue for local artists and photographers to display their works. Exhibits change every 7 weeks.

The Curator decides from the photos and the artist’s statement if he/she meets the criteria for acceptable works. The artist is then contacted and given the first available date in chronological order. Presently we have a two-year wait list. Curator is responsible for assigning the dates and keeping the calendar.

A month before the exhibit opens Curator meets with artist to go over the following:
1. Title of Show
2. Statement from Artist for Press Release
3. 3-5 digital photos for Press Related articles
4. Review the room and hallway in Mezzanine
5. Price list
6. Title cards
Two to three weeks before the show, Curator sends press release with photos to press list as well as President of the Friends, Activities Chair of the Friends, and the Director of the Library.
Change-over day - Curator should be present when the current artist takes down their exhibit and the new one goes up. This generally takes two hours on a Sunday. We have help to hang show.
Openings - The Friends budget has allowed for one Artist Reception a year, usually held in "Season". Other volunteers in the Friends organization help with hospitality. If the artist wants to host their own reception they work with the Library staff to rent the space and arrange for their own caterer.
