Barber-Que : (NOUN)
A unique celebration of life that occurs when you combine the functionality of a barbershop with the delicious grub of a barbecue.
The mission of the BarberQue project is to provide resources to a marginalized and often alienated group of people, create awareness around the issue of homelessness in Chicago, and build a community of acceptance and support.
BarberQue, to be held in late September, will bring together people from all walks of life to share their unique perspectives and a family-style meal.
What will be provided: a haircut, shave & shampoo, fresh clothing & shoes (including new underwear & socks), a toiletry package, a food package, and a well balanced family style barbeque meal. Rides to and from the event will also be arranged for participants.
Social Services: The following social services will have representatives present: local shelters, clothing providers, food access/food pantries, employment opportunities, mental health providers, and substance abuse assistance.
All time served on this project will be volunteer.
We Need:
- Volunteers (hair stylists, day-of volunteers, musicians, culinary geniuses)
- Donations (clothing & shoes, food, new-in-packaging toiletries, socks, underwear, etc.)
- $$$$ (to purchase remaining toiletries, socks & underwear, food, and other assorted materials)
BarberQue is not only meant to positively influence the lives of the homeless, but create connections and bonds between all human beings. Let's work together to make a change.
We need volunteers of all different types of skill sets! Talk to Megan today to learn more!
