Advocate for the refugee girls that Heshima Kenya serves in East Africa by helping get the word out about our work and sell the scarves that our artisans make!

Each scarf's proceeds are directly reinvested into the program to provide monthly stipends to our artisans, provide materials for them to work with and create opportunitie for career advancement. Our holistic model helps young refugee girls to build confidence, independence and self-sufficency through education, safe housing and entreprenuership. We are only able to be successful with the help of our amazing volunteers, who represent and share the story of our girls with others!

We'll be at the Ann Arbor Art Fair in the non-profits booth area from July 21-24 this year, and can't wait to share the story of our work with the Ann Arbor community. Respond to this with the date & times you are available to help and we will be in touch about an orientation call!

About Heshima Kenya

Location:

1111 N WELLS STREET, CHICAGO, IL 60610, US

Mission Statement

Heshima Kenya specializes in identifying and protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, especially girls, young women and their children living in Nairobi, Kenya. Our shelter, education and community outreach services, coupled with local resources and the refugee community, empower this population to live healthy lives. By providing resources for long-term support, these girls and young women become catalysts for strengthening networks creating sustainable change within the local and global communities.

Description

Heshima Kenya, a nonprofit organization operating in Nairobi, Kenya, is the first organization in Kenya devoted to protecting unaccompanied and separated refugee children and youth, with a special focus in supporting women and girls ages 13 to 23 years old from Somalia, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi.

We provide shelter, education, vocational training, case management support, and advocacy to participants and their children who have experienced the detrimental effects of war, the loss of their families, and, in many cases, kidnapping, rape, trafficking, unlawful detainment, and torture.

We also mobilize members of the refugee community through educational outreach. At the core of Heshima Kenya’s model is the creation of a social network that empowers girls and young women to strive for economic self-sufficiency and become community leaders in their own right.
