The evening GED program at the Lake Street Open Door Learning Center helps students who are working to pass their high school equivalency tests. There are four subjects on the test, but we almost always have students who need to practice math more than any other subjects.
You would be working with such students one-on-one or in small groups, and the materials would always be provided. The level of math ranges from basic operations with decimals and fractions to algebra 2 topics like using equations to solve problems, simplifying polynomials, finding area/volume of composite shapes, etc.
Some of the more basic word problems might look like this:
Bike path A is 4 miles long. Bike path B is 7 miles long. If April biked a total of 37 miles, how many times did she bike each path?
The trickier word problems might include one like this (or at least these were tricky for me)
At last year's party James had 35 liters of juice, and this was enough to completely fill 100 cups. At this year's party, the cups are smaller can hold 20% less volume than last year's cups. If James has 35 liters of juice again this year, how many full cups will he have this time? (When I first tried this problem, I thought the answer was 120, but that wasn't right)
If you enjoy helping people with learning math concepts and thinking mathematically, this position might be for you! The available times are between 5:30 and 8:30, Monday through Thursday. You can choose a time that works well for you.
Questions? Please contact Vadim (PM GED Teacher) if you have any questions. I can be reached at (612) 483-1763 or vrubinchik@mnliteracy.org
