After-School Academic Mentoring is one-on-one tutoring with youth at Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC), ages 5-18. The focus is to help the youth improve academic skills in fundamental subjects, overall academic organization, and help older students prepare for their future. It’s time to pass the torch to the next generation - a brighter future begins with you!
Academic Mentor’s Responsibility:
Be able to commit to at least one school year as an academic mentor
Spend a minimum of 3 hours per month with the student in a supervised academic setting
Assist youth in building fundamental skills (math, science or reading) in cooperation with the teaching staff
Serve as a positive role model and caring adult by modeling desirable behaviors (i.e. patience, tolerance, active listening, etc.)
Accept and relate to youth who may not share the academic mentor’s lifestyle and values
Act as a mandated reporter if any child abuse is suspected
Academic Mentor’s Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years of age
Successfully pass a background check
Provide 2 personal references
Complete mentor orientation session prior to starting as an academic mentor
Be dependable and consistent in meeting time commitments
Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures

Description
Be a Mentor (BAM) was founded in 2004 as an initiative of the Charleston Leadership Foundation. Be A Mentor's initial role was to recruit and refer individuals who were interested in mentoring to organizations throughout the Lowcountry. BAM has expanded from providing referrals to offering five signature school-based mentoring programs, that serve over 300 youth annually.
