Beyond Basics works with school aged children right in their own school, during the school day. Volunteers for our Reading Buddies program can work as often or as little as they wish. Opportunities to read to children (we provide the books and coordinate the children and the space in the school) for as little as one hour a week one time, one hour a week for several weeks or months, or more are available. No special skills are needed beyond the ability to read out loud with good pronunciation. A background check is required.

Mission Statement
Beyond Basics is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to delivery of student-centered preK-12 reading and literacy-enrichment programs. Beyond Basics collaborates with school communities in under-resourced neighborhoods to provide supplemental literacy programs during regular school hours.
Description
Beyond Basics was founded in 1999 as a volunteer coat donation project, Beyond Basics incorporated as a non-profit in 2002. Today, Beyond Basics has grown to serve thousands of children across metropolitan Detroit every year through literacy, literacy-enrichment, and community partnership programs.
The mission of Beyond Basics is to guide and support children in economic need to develop fundamental educational skills. We aim to move these children beyond the basics and prepare them for productive and meaningful lives. The goal of Beyond Basics is to improve reading proficiency for everyone.
Our objectives are to:
- (1) Deliver reading instruction that empowers students to learn, grow, and participate in a dynamic, information-based world; and
- (2) Build vocabulary and comprehension through exposure to literacy-enrichment activities and community partnerships that are success-focused.
