The NYC Health + Hospitals Kings County Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a Federal and State grant funded program. We work to improve the health of low-income elderly who are 60 years and older. Our program supplements seniors with a monthly food package containing a variety of nutritious commodity foods such as milk, cheese, 100% juice, ready-to-eat cereal, rice, pasta, peanut butter, dry beans, canned meat, poultry, or fish, and canned fruits and vegetables. All commodity items are provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). It is our mission to serve our community and alleviate hunger. For more information on the CSFP please visit http://www.fns.usda.gov/csfp/commodity-supplemental-food-program-csfp .

We are looking to take on volunteers this fall (Sep/Oct 2016) who wish to serve their community and give back. Volunteers would need to be compassionate and patient as we are serving a senior population. Who can multitask and take their role seriously. This would make an ideal opportunity for students who are looking to gain experience in the public health or nutrition field, and adults looking to serve their community. If you are a student who wishes to fulfill fieldwork requirements please let the volunteer coordinator know in advance. We are looking for volunteers to make at least a 3 month commitment. You are able to choose which day(s) which work best for you. We are looking for 5-8 volunteers to fill two of our four hour time slots; 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM or 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at both of our locations. We are an located at 840 Alabama Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11207 and 91-29 143 rd St. Queens, NY 11435, both sites are located near public transportation.

Volunteers would fill such as roles as;

Community service aide which entails putting together the supplemental food packages, distribution of packages to seniors, organization of the food storage area and help with intake of delivery.

Community assistant entails enrolling participants, checking senior documents, clerical work, answering phones and translation.

Since we are a part of NYC Health + Hospitals Kings County, all volunteers must attend an orientation on hospital policy, safety, and HIPAA, pass a background check and take a physical. Physicals and background checks are at no cost to volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering with us this fall please send an e-mail to the volunteer coordinator at Lillian.taylor@nychhc.org .
