This summer, volunteer for KidsBridge and help children believe in themselves!
Inspiring Minds welcomes you to join our volunteers, our staff, and 150 incoming kindergartners for an exciting 5 week summer program called KidsBridge, a free Kindergarten-readiness program for children who are registered to begin school in the fall. KidsBridge students are predominantly youth from low-income families living in the city of Providence. Children face distinctive challenges that often leave them ill-prepared for school. Language barriers and limited access to education and resources are just some of the factors that leave children at risk of starting school behind their peers.
- 39.7% children under 18 in Providence live below the poverty threshold.
- 46% of children in Providence live in single parent families.
- 23% of children in Providence are born to mothers with less than a high school diploma
KidsBridge attempts to address the common effects of these inequities by accelerating student learning in reading, writing, math, and social skills!
Become a KidsBridge volunteer and you can expect:
- To volunteer at least one full day a week from 7:45am to 1pm (Can't volunteer that often? Keep reading to see more opportunities)
- To be at the same school, in the same classroom, for the entirety of the program, thus building enriching relationships with the students, teacher, and other volunteers in that room
- To work with groups of 2-3 students at a time, helping with basic reading, writing, and math skills
- To serve as a strong role-model for Pre-K students, helping them recognize the importance of classroom manners and getting along well with others
Can't volunteer consistently one day a week?
We also need volunteers to help with:
Training New Volunteers
Field trips
Assessing Student Knowledge
KidsBridge Graduation
Don't see an option here that fits you? Give us a call to discuss more options!
Before volunteering, we request that new volunteers participate in a 90 minute training session and agree to a BCI which we do at no cost in our office. This training will give you the resources and knowledge of school policies that are required before beginning your service. A schedule will be sent to you upon request!

Description
Inspiring Minds is an antiracist organization committed to closing equity gaps based on race, ethnicity, first language, and economic status that impact RI students and families. The organization was founded as Lippitt Hill Tutorial in1963 to provide academic support for children in two segregated elementary schools. Since then, the organization has grown into a citywide service and, in 1988, became Volunteers in Providence Schools to reflect its citywide approach to addressing academic inequities. Finally, the name Inspiring Minds was adopted in 2008 as the programs and scope of work expanded beyond Providence City's borders. Join us as we aim for programming in schools across the state!
