Canine Carestaff Assistants provide overall care of shelter dogs by providing a clean and enriching environment for dogs during their stay at Dane County Humane Society.

During the first two months duties include spot-cleaning kennels, enrichment activities, dishes and laundry and other care duties as needed.

In the third month volunteers are trained in dog socialization and begin assisting with dog potty breaks and spending quiet time with dogs in their kennel.

In the fourth month, Canine Care Assistants who have demonstrated good attendance, meet the Essential Requirements for working with CCA dogs and follow protocols will be invited to train to work with more challenging dogs.

Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work independently
  • High-level English reading, writing, spelling and communication skills
  • Ability to take direction from staff and follow implemented procedures and protocols
  • Ability to squat, bend, twist, lift or stand for long periods, and to move quickly if needed
  • Ability to hear and see the communications from the dogs you interact with in the shelter for safety purposes
  • Minimum commitment: one 2-3 hour weekly shift for 12 months
